Excellent Coffee was founded by Michael Kapos, who started selling coffee out of the back of his station wagon in the 1950's. Bill Kapos, current President and CEO, grew up in his father's company. It wasn't long after taking the reigns in 1970, that Bill began acquiring the equipment necessary to build the first new roasting facility the state of Rhode Island had seen in over 100 years. With a successful roasting and packaging facility now in place, Excellent continued to grow.

In 1990, Bill took advantage of an opportunity to purchase one of his largest customers at the time, Downeast Coffee Inc. of Portland, Maine. With this acquisition came the addition of warehousing locations in Bangor & Caribou, thus enhancing the company's capabilities to service customers in far northern New England. Our Portland location has recently begun roasting and packaging ECO Preserve: an exclusive line of micro-roasted, specialty grade coffees.

In 1993, Excellent Coffee Company increased its presence in the retail market with the acquisition of Ocean Coffee Roasters, a Rhode Island based chain of specialty coffee cafes with two in-store roasters. The Ocean Coffee Roasters roasting facility supplies a number of local restaurants with their daily roasts, using estate and organic coffees, as well as blending atypical beans into exotic blends. In addition, Ocean Coffee Roasters maintains a full commissary, supplying daily fresh-baked goods and light menu items to our four cafes.

The Excellent Coffee Company has grown rapidly from a one-person enterprise to its present size, employing more than 100 people. We're big enough to offer a full range of products at competitive prices, but small enough to maintain the highest quality goods and service as well as the personal touch that only a family-run business can provide.
